One guy wrote a tool which patches D3D this way so apps/games always use REAL OpenGL instead of the D3D-wrapper. They state that certain OpenGL apps/games (not all, but for sure Quake III) don't use real OpenGL - but instead in Win XP are forced to use a D3D wrapper, basically *emulating* OpenGL using the D3D wrapper under XP.Higher 4:3 resolutions can be forced for the Glide or Direct3D mode by using a wrapper such as dgVoodoo 2 (this does not change the aspect ratio, so widescreen resolutions will be stretched from 4:3).
